Berry Gordy was going to originally name his record company "Tammy Records," after the song "Tammy" by Debbie Reynolds. But when he went to register the label, the name was already taken. After finding this out, he still wanted to use some of the name so he dropped the last two letters of the name, added "LA", and came up with TAMLA.
